Italian Serie A football club AC Milan will head to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sbobet8888 after Uefa imposed the stiffest sanction so far on a team from one of Europe’s top five leagues for a breach of its financial fair play regulations.
Uefa yesterday (Wednesday) announced that the Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), chaired by José Narciso da Cunha Rodrigues, had decided to exclude Milan from participating in the next Uefa club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next two seasons.
This means that Milan will be ejected from the 2018-19 Europa League after the club qualified by finishing sixth in Serie A last season. Uefa said that the decision may be appealed to CAS, an option that Milan has decided to take up.
In a statement, the club said: “The Adjudicatory Chamber of Uefa's Club Financial Control Body has decided to sanction AC Milan, for the breach of the Uefa Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations in the three-year period between July 2014 and June 2017 with one year of exclusion from Uefa Club Competitions.
“After taking note of the aforementioned ruling, AC Milan has instructed its legal team to appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, seeking for a prompt review of the ruling.”
Uefa’s decision comes amid continuing uncertainty over Milan’s financial position. At the weekend, the Ricketts family, owners of Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise the Chicago Cubs, announced they are in talks to acquire Milan, but they are set to face competition from another US party.
The Milan office of the Edelman public relations firm, which has been hired to represent the Ricketts, said the entire family is interested in a takeover of Milan for “a medium- to long-period investment” and wants to create “a strong bond with the city”.
However, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Rocco Commisso, owner of the New York Cosmos, is already in negotiations with current Milan chairman Yonghong Li. Gazzetta said Commisso is being backed by US financial services company Goldman Sachs in his approach, adding that he is ahead of the Ricketts family in the race for Milan.
In April 2017, former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s holding company, Fininvest, completed the protracted sale of its 99.93-per-cent stake in AC Milan to Luxembourg-based Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux.
Rossoneri Sport sbobet8888 Investment Lux, which is controlled by Li, replaced the original Chinese bid vehicle, Sino-Europe Sports Investment Management Changxing (SES). US private equity fund Elliott earlier agreed to provide Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux with the necessary funds to complete the transaction.
Elliott provided €180m ($212.4m) to complete the deal, plus a further €128m to aid investment in the playing squad, with AC Milan spending over €200m on players in 2017 alone. The loans, with an average interest rate of just below 10 per cent, will have to be repaid by October 2018.
The Reuters news agency said Commisso has bid for 70 per cent of Milan. Li last week failed to make a €32m payment to Milan, the final part of €120m he had committed to pay the club as part of his deal to acquire it from Berlusconi.
Reuters said that Elliott stepped in to make the €32m payment, adding that the fund manager could gain full control of Milan if Li cannot pay it back by July 6. sbobet8888
